OpenWhisk: A Perfect Mix?

Serverless computing is sometimes called Functions as a Service (FaaS) and seems to many to be the natural progression from IaaS and BaaS approaches. Managing server instances and containers is a drag.

Thinking about cost optimization and worrying about idle capacity is a distraction from building applications. Serverless computing solves these problems by making them non-problems.

All the big cloud players have a serverless product, but OpenWhisk is the most interesting. It is a key component of IBM’s cloud offering, but it is open source and can be run multi-cloud or onsite.

First class support for Swift and a variety of novel or unique features differentiate it from offerings from Google, AWS, and others. In this talk, we will survey what OpenWhisk is about, walk though the usage workflow, and talk about what makes it different and maybe better than the other options.

Questions from the audience will be encouraged if not demanded.
